Healthy Gums Are Just as Important as Healthy Teeth! Most of our patients do not know that they are suffering from gum disease or at risk! Gum disease can be caused by poor oral hygiene and certain health conditions. A huge factor with the health of gums can also be smoking. Gum disease is classified into two main types: gingivitis, and periodontitis.

GINGIVITIS

Gingivitis is the first signs and symptoms of gum disease. It presents itself as a mild irritation, redness and swelling (inflammation) of your gingiva (gums). The quickest way to tell if you suffer from gingivitis is if there is bleeding when you brush your teeth. This is quite common and is quick to resolve after a clean from the dentist. However, if is left untreated can progress into periodontitis which is more severe. ​

These are some symptoms of Gingivitis:

  • Swollen and rounded gums

  • Bleeding when brushing

  • Gums feel tender to touch

  • Bad breath.

PERIODONTITIS / PERIODONTAL DISEASE

Periodontitis is an infection that occurs below the gum line and begins to affect the suppoting bone around your teeth. If left untreated, the deposits of bacteria that stick to your teeth and release infection that eat away at the bone. The long term effects of this is bone and tooth loss. Periodontal disease is unfortunately quite common but can preventable and requires very regular treatment to maintain healthy bone support. The main cause is usually poor oral hygiene and smoking. Treatment includes professionally cleaning the pockets around your teeth to remove the bacteria build up and infection. Regular cleaning and treatment is the only solution to maintaining this disease.

These are some symptoms of Periodonitis:

  • Loose teeth

  • Pain when you chew or bite

  • Gums that pull away from your teeth (recede), making your teeth look longer than normal

  • Sensitivity

  • Bad Breath.
